We’ve kicked off the submission process for the 11th edition of SHOWOFF section!

ShowOFFpower Mode ON!

The open call to the 11th edition of the Krakow Photomonth’s ShowOFF Section has been launched. This inherent part of the festival, which is devoted to newcomers, is often a pass for them to a career in the photography world. Submissions are accepted until 13 January 2019.

The ShowOFF Section is an equally important part, next to the Main Programme, of the Krakow Photomonth and presents premiere projects of young artists selected through an open competition. Each year more than 600 artists compete to be nominated as one of eight laureates of the ShowOFF Section and be able to work on their individual exhibitions under mentorship of renowned visual arts experts.

Marga Rotteveel, 2019 juror: “I expect comprehensive and intricate narrations based on sound conceptual foundations. Visual language must be clear and comprehensible; I’m interested in artists who are able to work out new or extend the existing methods of building a story.”

A debutant is an artist who has not exhibited his or her works in an important opinion-making centre like a museum or art gallery representing and actively promoting artists and has not received any prize in a festival or another photographic event. The submissions from both photographers and interdisciplinary artists are very welcome by the organisers.

Why is it worthwhile?

The ShowOFF competition provides the potential to have one’s works analysed by professionals from the worlds of photography and visual arts, and presented to the large festival public. The winning eight in collaboration with the renowned experts will work out the final shape of their projects to be eventually presented at a collective exhibition during the Krakow Photomonth 2019. They will also be provided with a possibility to take part in a one-day workshop at a photographic laboratory, Lablab, where they can acquire first-hand master knowledge about key aspects of proper preparation of files to production and learn about production novelties.

Katarzyna Wieczorek, ShowOFF Coordinator: “The ShowOFF Section is not a competition resulting in a one-off event making an impressive insert in the artist’s portfolio; neither is it only a platform for an exchange of experience, concepts, and ideas with curators who become laureates’ mentors for a couple of months, but above all an excellent opportunity to find a common artistic and visual language with other participants of the whole project.”

What is new?

For the first time, we accept two projects to be assessed by the jury. This is great news for artists who find it difficult to make a choice, and for curators who will get an insight to the body of work of a given artist. As a tradition, the submitted works will be assessed by photographic professionals from Poland and abroad, who need not be introduced to visual arts lovers. They are Marga Rotteveel, Łukasz Rusznica, Monika Szewczyk-Wittek and Michał Szlaga. Each of them will choose two projects out of those sent and will work over their final shape along with their authors.
