PORTFOLIO REVIEW

The Portfolio Review is an opportunity for novice creators to submit their work for evaluation by eminent specialists in the form of a series of one-on-one meetings. Every year, nearly one hundred candidates apply to participate in the Portfolio Review, with the top thirty being selected. Each participant chooses several reviewers with whom he or she would like to talk face to face. In 2020, the Portfolio Review was for the first time organised online, in cooperation with the Fotofestiwal in Łódź. Its laureates were Marta Bogdańska with her project Shifters, which will be presented during Photomonth 2021; and Sebastian Collett with Ghost Man, which will be exhibited at the 2021 Fotofestiwal in Łódź. The winners of the previous editions of the Portfolio Review are: Weronika Perłowska (Anger Detracts from Her Beauty, 2019), Valentyn Odnoviun (Surveillance, 2018), Wiktor Dąbkowski (Flirtation Cards, 2017), Wiktoria Wojciechowska (Sparks, 2016), and Bogusław Madej (SP9DGO, 2015).

SHIFTERS project centers around a little known history of agents: suspicious squirrels, spying dolphins, nuclear lizards, photographer pigeons. I research animal participation in wars, spy programs, Red Cross or police using various sources and media. Referring to  Éric Baratay concepts I propose to look for visual history from an animal point of view and for their agency or subjectivity.

Sebastian Collet

We the living are not only haunted by our ancestors; we are also their ghosts — their afterlife. We carry their demons in our DNA. We are the material result of their every decision. What will we decide to do with this inheritance?
In 1898, my grandfather was born in the “promised land.” Workers like his father had flocked to Lodz, Poland — a burgeoning hub for industrial manufacturing. The city was a melting pot of cultures, with Jews comprising a third of its population. Upon Hitler’s invasion in 1939, their promise was swiftly turned into a curse.
