Two participants will be selected for exhibitions in Krakow and Lodz in 2021!
PHOTO MATCH’s model breathes new life into the traditional formula of portfolio reviews through placing a special emphasis on the series of open networking events, public presentations and an equal status granted to the reviewers as well as all artists. Twenty reviewers and twenty authors will be invited to participate this year in unique edition organized together by Fotofestiwal and Krakow Photomonth Festival.
WHAT EXACTLY IS PHOTO MATCH?
- VIEWING PRESENTATIONS 3-6 of August 2020
Due to the special online edition we decided to dedicate more time to slowly view the presentations from authors and experts. During these four days you will have a chance to see the brief presentations made by all participants who will showcase their most ingenious projects.
- SESSION ONE: MATCHING 7th of August 11:00AM – 1:00PM CET
At this point, the photographers and reviewers are granted access to the online system that allows them to match and book two personal meetings with one another. It means each participant is going to have 4 meetings during the afternoon session.
- SESSION TWO: ONLINE MEETINGS 7th of August 2:00PM – 4:00PM CET
Session two is devoted to the series of private meetings held in accordance with the timetable generated by the online reservation system. Every photographer and reviewer attends four meetings at the most, two of which they’ve arranged themselves. PHOTO MATCH will conclude with an open session, an informal gathering of all participants who can finally enjoy some conversation with someone previously unavailable, with no strings attached.
HOW TO APPLY?
The application consists of:
- An application form filled online (link available HERE)
A preview of 10 photographs from the project you would like to present during the review sent in a JPG or PNG format, preferred size 1920 px length, in a separate email to email@example.com until June 30th 2020 titled: PHOTO MATCH APPLICATION FIRST NAME LAST NAME. Files should not exceed 5 MB in total.

Franek AmmerCurator of Fotofestiwal International Festival of Photography in Lodz
Before joining Fotofestiwal, he co-founded TIFF International Photography Festival in Wroclaw with which he cooperates to this day. He devoted a large part of his work to bringing up aspects related to the photobooks and popularizing them in Poland. This interest resulted in several exhibitions, lectures and cooperation with prominent figures from the world of photography and the publishing scene of photobooks. In the Fotofestiwal collective he is responsible for the festival program, coordination of exhibitions, events and publications. Recently he started to teach photography at Fine Arts Academy in Lodz. He is also a co-founder of the Przestrzeń Robocza (Working Space) – a place dedicated to artists talks, workshops and experimental work in visual and multimedia arts.
Alex BocchettoPhoto editor, book designer, self-taught bookbinder, publisher
Photo editor, book designer, self-taught bookbinder, publisher. In 2012, London, he established with Valentina Abenavoli the photobook and artist books publishing house AKINA which as of today has printed more than 20 titles. Beside the publishing house, he runs a program of intensive workshops, lectures and teaching in collaboration with international partners such as: Paris Photobook club (Paris, FR, 2012), IC Visual Lab (Bristol, UK, 2013), PlanaR (Bari, IT, 2014), Book Case Study (Den Haag, NE, 2014), The Photographers Gallery (London, UK, 2014) and more.
Shannon GhannamGlobal Education Director at Magnum Photos
Responsible for the celebrated agency’s educational programming globally, including the recently launched online learning platform Magnum Learn. Previously she managed Content Strategy and Development at Reuters, working to showcase on multiple platforms the agency’s multimedia content. Shannon has collaborated on numerous photographic books, international exhibitions and multimedia projects including the Emmy award winning photojournalism app Reuters The Wider Image. She studied at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, Australia where she graduated with First Class Honours in Photography
Angel Luis GonzalesDirector of PhotoIreland
He is a Director of PhotoIreland, an independent organisation dedicated to stimulating a critical dialogue around Photography in Ireland and to internationally promoting the work of Irish-based artists. He won the David Manley Entrepreneur Award in 2011 for the PhotoIreland Festival project. In 2011, he launched 'The Library Project', a public resource library of photobooks, holding in excess of 3000 items from more than 300 publishers worldwide. The Library Project also gives name to Ireland's Art bookshop, a unique space in Dublin's city centre, offering the collection, an eclectic bookshop, and a productive gallery programme. He has been a portfolio reviewer at events such as Les Rencontres d'Arles, Format Derby, PhotoEspaña, and The Triennial of Photography Hamburg. He is responsible for books such as ‘Martin Parr's Best Books of the Decade’, New Irish Works, and the ongoing TLP Editions. More recently, he developed OVER Journal, a new critical journal of Photography and Visual Culture for the 21st, launching in Summer 2020.
Joanna GorlachHead of the Krakow Photomonth Festival
A graduate of cultural studies at the Jagiellonian University (2007), she studied photography at the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava (2008-2011). Since 2011, she has been cooperating with the Foundation for Visual Arts as a project curator and exhibition producer. In the years 2013-2018 she cooperated with the Zofia Rydet's Foundation developing the archive. He conducts cyclical workshop and theoretical classes in the theory and criticism of photography (including the Pedagogical University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, the Academy of Arts in Szczecin, the Academy of Photography). From 2019, the Head of the Krakow Photomonth Festival.
Karol GrygorukA photographer and anthropologist of visuality
A graduate of the Institute of Applied Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw and a PhD student at the Institute of Creative Photography in Opava. In his scientific work, he focuses on the subject of engaged photography and the impact of new media on contemporary visual culture. Lecturer at the Academy of Photography in Warsaw. In his photographic and documentary activities he has been cooperating with non-governmental organizations for many years. His works were presented at individual and collective exhibitions at home and abroad. The author of the documentary series 'I LOVE YOU DAD' and a book publication of the same title, showing the relations of power and society in the Thai tourist paradise ruled by a military regime. He lives and works in Warsaw and the Middle East.
Virgilio FerreiraPhotographer, curator and educator
Virgilio lives and works in Porto as a photographer, curator and educator. He is the founder and the director of Ci.CLO, an independent organisation dedicated to research, training and experimentation in photography, as well as interacting with other artistic, social, and environmental studies. In 2018 he has created the Bienal Fotografia do Porto, proposing a set of residences and grants for the invited artists to develop new projects. It focuses on supporting innovative forms of visual representation that raise awareness of the impact of human behaviour in social and environmental terms. For the last 20 years he has been developing projects in the fields of education, creation, and programming in partnership with several festivals, museums, cultural centres and art schools in Portugal and abroad. Recently, he was responsible for the organization and curation of the ESCAPE project, a co-production with Triennale der Photographie Hamburg and Ci.CLO. As an artist his work has been widely exhibited, published and awarded in Europe, the Middle East, the United States, and Southeast Asia and represented in several public and private collections.
Michael ItkoffCofounder of Daylight Books
Cofounder of Daylight Books, a non-profit organization dedicated to publishing art and photography books. For over a decade, Daylight has been dedicated to publishing art and photography via its print and digital publishing programs. By exploring the documentary mode along with the more conceptual concerns of fine-art, Daylight’s uniquely collectible publications work to revitalize the relationship between art, photography, and the world-at-large. Michael has been deeply involved in the publishing industry in both print and digital media and he has written for the NYTimes Lens blog, Art Asia Pacific, Nueva Luz, Conscientious and the Forward. Before starting Daylight, Michael spent time at the Annie Leibovitz Studio, Aperture Foundation and Rizzoli International Publications. His monograph, 'Street Portraits', was published by Charta Editions in 2009
Kasia KubickaGraphic designer, editor
Graphic designer, editor. She spent most of her life in France, where she studied at Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg. In 2005 she returned to Poland to study at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Her experience consists of several years of work in the press, including Newsweek, as well as long-term cooperation with cultural institutions. Being most passionate about books, paper and photography, she focuses on book and album design projects. Winner of many awards - including Photography of the Year 2019, in the category of photography of the year and the best books of the year Grand Press Photo 2019 for the project 'Echo' by Maksymilian Rigamonti. She also runs series of workshops on creating photobooks
PABLO BERÁSTEGUI LOZANOArt producer
He has developed a strong career as an art producer in Spain, working in different fields, mostly in large scale, collaborative projects. As an example, he held the position of CEO of Donostia San Sebastián 2016 European Capital of Culture, between october 2014 and june 2017, the most ambitious project he has been involved since he started working as a manager of cultural initiatives. He also directed the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts PHotoEspaña from 2002 until 2006 and four editions of La noche en blanco (Madrid’s Nuit Blanche), from 2007 until 2010. In 2008, he was appointed as General Coordinator of Matadero Madrid, a new centre for contemporary arts in Madrid where he worked until December 2012 when he was asked to undertake the redefinition of Conde Duque, where he worked through 2013, until he left Madrid to launch Pausa, a program of residences for artists, poets, thinkers and researchers in a rural environment. Currently, Pablo Berástegui resides halfway between Madrid and Porto (Portugal), where he directs the project Salut au monde!, a program of exhibitions of contemporary photography focused on exploring who the Others are, those who a priori do not resemble the idea we have of ourselves, and celebrating diversity.
AMIE NORRISFounder of ACN
An agency based in New York City, fostering the careers of female artists worldwide. After many years of working in the field of photography dominated by men, she decided to start her own agency that would stand out from hundreds of other reps and she decided to focus on the female representation. She is very interested in seeing new projects and meeting new, young artists.
MARINA PAULENKAIndependent curator, art consultant, and educator in photography
She was Artistic Director of UNSEEN Foundation and UNSEEN, a platform for contemporary photography that presents the latest developments in the field of photography and amplifies the careers of boundary-pushing artists. Prior to her role at Unseen, she worked as a curator and Artistic Director of the Organ Vida International Photography Festival and the non-for- profit Organ Vida Photography Organization, the leading institution or contemporary photography in Croatia. So far she has curated numerous exhibitions and work with artists such as Tabita Rezaire, Dana Lixenberg, Zanele Muholi, Hannah Starkey, Roger Ballen, Pieter Hugo, Nina Berman, Amalia Ulman, Laia Abril, Katrin Koenning and many others. Paulenka is the recipient of the Lucie Awards 2018 for best curator/exhibition of the year for the exhibition “Engaged, Active, Aware: Women Perspectives Now”. Paulenka nominates photographers for The Joop Swart Masterclass, the Prix Pictet, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize and she is an international juror and portfolio reviewer at many institutions, awards and festivals worldwide including the Les Rencontres d’Arles, Hamburg Triennial, Robert Capa Prize, FORMAT.
LIZA PREMIYAKManaging Editor at The Calvert Journal
Managing Editor at The Calvert Journal living in London. She writes about photography, electronic music, art, and fashion. Her writing has appeared also in Apollo, The Art Newspaper, Magnum Photos among other arts publications.
Tereza RudolfArt critic and curator connected closely with Fotograf Festival Prague
Tereza Rudolf is an art critic and curator connected closely with Fotograf Festival Prague. She has collaborated on the festival dramaturgy and selections from 2016. She works as a freelance curator and art project manager. Between 2014 and 2016 she curated art public space Galerie NIKA in Prague and she has prepared several exhibitions of young artists in Prague, Brno, and Leipzig of young artists. She focuses on borders between photography, video and contemporary art. Tereza Rudolf is also a member of Fotograf Magazine editorial board
AARON SCHUMANPhotographer, writer and curator
Schuman’s photographic work is exhibited and published internationally, and is held in a number of public and private collections. In addition to his own photographic work, Schuman has contributed texts to many books including Aperture Conversations: 1985 to the Present (2018), Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins (2018), Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves (2015), Vision Anew (2015), and The Photographer’s Playbook (2014), amongst many others; he also regularly writes for magazines such as Aperture, Foam, Frieze, Magnum Online, The British Journal of Photography and more. Additionally, Schuman has curated several major exhibitions, including “Indivisible: New American Documents” (FOMU Antwerp, 2016), “In Appropriation” (Houston Center of Photography, 2012), “Other I: Alec Soth, WassinkLundgren, Viviane Sassen” (Hotshoe London, 2011), and “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” (FotoFest, 2010). In 2014, Schuman served as Chief Curator of Krakow Photomonth – entitled Re:Search. In 2018, he also served as Curator of JaipurPhoto Festival. Schuman was the founder and editor of SeeSaw Magazine (2004-2014), and is currently Programme Leader of the MA Photography programme at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).

He established a design studio in London in 2001, and has been art director of “The Wire” magazine since 2008. In 2011 he co-founded Here Press. He has designed books with Susan Meiselas (Here Press & Multistory), Julie Mehretu (White Cube, Marian Goodman Gallery), Stacy Kranitz (Here Press), Mona Hatoum (White Cube), Edmund Clark (Here Press & Aperture), Simon Roberts (Dewi Lewis), Jack Latham (Here Press) and Tom Hunter (Hatje Cantz & Hartmann Books).
Lars WillumeitCurator, author, and art educator
Curator, author, and art educator based in Switzerland. Previously working as an independent curator, since 2018, he works as a curator and head of exhibition projects (since 2020) at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne - a museum dedicated to photography in all its diversity. With degrees in Social Anthropology (London School of Economics and Political Science) and Curatorial Studies (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste), his interests are in photography, documentarisms, regimes of representation, and visual cultures. Recent curatorial projects include: Yann Mingard – 'Everything is up in the air, thus our vertigo', Musée de l’Elysée (2019); Salvatore Vitale – 'How to Secure a Country', Fotostiftung Schweiz (2019). In 2016 he was the guest curator during 15th Krakow Photomonth
ISTVAN VIRÁGVÖLGYICurator, photo editor, secretary of the Capa Grand Prize Hungary
He worked at the leading Hungarian news portal Origo first as photo editor and then as head of photography between 2007 and 2011 after which he joined MTI Hungarian News Agency as head of the photo desk. Since 2014 he works at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center (Budapest, Hungary), he is the secretary of the Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize Hungary. He also lectures about documentary photography and photo editing at the Budapest Metropolitan University. István is interested primarily in documentary photography though in the broadest sense of the phrase.
SALVATORE VITALEVisual artist, editor and educator
In his multi-layered artistic practice and research, Vitale’s work focuses on the development and complexity of modern societies exploring power structures, visual politics and technology, whilst making use of expanded documentary analysis, including elements of fiction, speculative storytel-ling and the use of multiple visual forms. Vitale’s work has been exhibited widely in museums and at photo festivals, with solo shows at the Swiss Foundation for Photography Winterthur (2018), the Photoforum Pasquart Biel/Bienne (2017), MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow (2018), Hamburg Triennale of Photography (2018). Other shows include Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam (2019), the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation (2019), OCAT Shanghai (2017), OCAT Shenzhen (2018), Fotodok Utrecht (2018), Kibla Contemporary Art Space Maribor (2019), T3 Photo Festival Tokyo (2017) and Lianzhou Foto Festival (2018). Vitale is a lecturer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) where he leads the Transmedia Storytelling programme. He has led workshops worldwide and has taught at art colleges internationally including the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), the Paris College of Arts (PCA), the University of South Wales (USW) and the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). Vitale is also the co-founder and editor-in-chief of YET magazine, a Swiss-based international photography magazine that focuses on the evolution of the photography practice within the contemporary art field.
